Koichi Nagao,
President of The Japan Society
for Sexual Medicine
On September 13, 2018, I was appointed as the President of the Japan Society for Sexual Medicine. As a society, we aim to contribute to the advancement of science, human health, and welfare by promoting fundamental and clinical research related to sexual function and promoting mutual interaction between members at home and abroad.
The Japan Society for Sexual Medicine began as a research group on impotence in 1978, and the first conference on impotence was held in January 1979. The gathering was held prior to the World Meeting on Impotence held in Paris in 1984.
The conference has been developed under the leadership of founders Dr. Masafumi Shirai, Dr. Nobuhisa Ishii, Dr Ken Marumo, and Dr Mikio Namiki.
In anticipation of the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine 2020 (September 16-19, 2020 Yokohama), our goal is to make the event a success. We would like to ask for your further cooperation, and we will work to ensure a wonderful hospitality and a productive session.
Second, in order to become a specialist certified by the Japan Specialty Medical Board who can advertise, we will be taking steps to increase the current number from 914 members to more than 1,000. Both the Japan Society for Sexual Medicine and the International Society for Sexual Medicine had their start in research on erections and erectile dysfunction, but now have a wide focus on general human sexuality. Since this is an interdisciplinary study, I would like to prepare a system where people in other areas can easily participate in events or have access to research in sexual medicine.
Finally, I would like to encourage the mutual exchange of ideas and thoughts between those in Japan and overseas in order to develop new medical treatment practices in Japan.
